Jacoby's argument is the death rattle of a dying age, there's good in it but as a card caring member of this postmodern age, and an optimist, i see more good on this side of the enlightenment and am glad for it.

have you seen Idiocracy? movie with Luke Wilson about the dumbing down of our country. One night Claudia and I watched the whole thing on YouTube because the intro was so funny, 10 min clips at a time. I'ts really funny but rated R for language and sexual humor.

Amy Butz

thanks for this post. i especially enjoyed the Gene Veith quote.

Craig

Veith is hard to beat on a lot of stuff like this, Amy, both on his blog as well as in his occasional articles for WORLD magazine.

Haven't seen the film, Rob, but I will on your suggestion. Sounds interesting.

that's irony well summarized, craig. don't forget about the oppressive dogmatism with which religion distracts its followers from this wonderful solve-all rationalism.

makes me glad to be a folk.

Craig

From it, Tyler, or to/through it?

Charliam

I'm not sure I understand . . . is that the point? ;)

Craig

Gotcha. Missed the sarcasm in your initial post (which may be why Charliam doesn't understand). Ah, the clarity of the digital world.

tyler

from - i hear a lot of rationalist arguments against religion saying that religious dogmatism prevents people from "seeing the light" of this rationalist system. supposedly, if religions didn't get in the way all the time, the world would be better off in every way.
